|
Pongal Vizha and Tamil Day - Tamil Manram celebrated Pongal
in a grand scale at
India Community Center, Milpitas. Mr. Vijayan Machingal, Deputy
Consul General of India, and Dr. George Hart, Professor of Tamil Studies
at U.C. Berkeley were special guests. A video presentation on Tamil language
and heritage was presented, followed by Veenai recital and various cultural
programs by children.

Pongal Charity Drive - Under the banner of Tamil Cultural Center, a charity drive was
conducted for the Tri-City Homeless Coalition.
We collected items from their wishlist. We want to thank all the members and volunteers who generously donated
for a good cause.

Tamil Manram along with
Breeze Foundation and
Santa Clara library
presented a workshop to meet Ms. Uma Krishnaswami and Ms. Shiraaz Bhabha,
author and illustrator of the book "Closet Ghosts". Ms. Uma Krishnaswami
is the author of several popular children's books including "Naming Maya",
"Chachaji's Cup", "Monsoon", "The Broken Tusk: Stories of the Hindu God
Ganesha", "Shower of Gold: Girls and Women in stories of India". More than
60 children participated in the workshop and made some very interesting
creations.

Tamil Manram ushered in the Tamil New Year in style with "Chithiraik
Kondaattam 2006". Bharathi Naataka Manram presented Prof. Indira
Parthasarathy's play "Ramanujar" for the first time in North America. Youthful light music troupe
Raagalaya made its maiden steps on its musical journey with
"Enrenrum Punnagai".

|
Continuing its tradition, Tamil Manram participated in the Independence Day celebrations in Fremont, organized by Federation of Indo Americans. It set up a booth to promote Tamil Manram membership, Thendral magazine, and Sakthi TV.

Tamil Manram members and patrons gathered with family and friends at the annual picnic to celebrate the summer and to enjoy good company and gourmet food. Tamil Manram volunteers organized several games and fun filled activities for adults as well as children. Every one had a great time.

General body meeting and election for the committee of 2007 was held at India Community Center, Milpitas. Kurinchi Kumaran,
Treasurer, presented the accounts for the year 2006. Thillai Kumaran announced allocating $5,000 from the proceeds of Tamil Manram for
the years 2005 and 2006 for Tamil Cultural Center. The following new officers were elected: Kurinchi Kumaran - President, T.S. Ram - Vice
President (Admin), Sumathi Natesan - Vice President (Cultural), Praveen Reguraman - Secretary, Uma Chokkalingam - Treasurer, and Sriram
Narasimhan - Convenor. The following members were nominated to the committee: Chockkalingam Karuppaiah - Membership, Meena
Anand - Youth Coordinator, Sivakami Sambasivam and Amlu Natesan - Youth Representatives.

Around 150 children showcased their talents in the Children's Day 2007. Thanks to the parents and the children for putting in so much of effort in making the event a grand success. It is wonderful to see the children speak in mazalaith thamiz. It gives
us hope that the future generation will keep Tamil alive in the bay area.
